The Broadcast Research Council of South Africa (BRC) is an independent, non-profit organisation that manages the country’s official radio and television audience measurement. The BRC (Reg number…..) carries the mandate to provide trustworthy, transparent data that supports a healthy media industry on behalf of their members.

How it works

  • Invitation

    You may be contacted by a verified interviewer at your house, by telephone or receive a secure link. Research agencies that BRC currently works with are AskAfrica, GFK and Nielsen.

  • Survey

    Answer questions about your household and media use. There are no right or wrong answers.

  • Anonymous results

    All data is aggregated – never shared individually.

  • Anonymous processing

    Your answers are stored and analysed without identifying details.

  • Voluntary participation

    You can skip questions or withdraw at any time.

  • Data security

    All data is handled by accredited researchers under South African Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) and the Cybercrimes Act 2020.

BRC is working on behalf of the media industry. Parties like broadcasters SABC, E-Media and Multichoice use BRC’s data on viewing and listening to learn about viewing preferences of different groups in South Africa and they use it to optimize their programming.
